Shop small, impact

Bookshop.org, essentially Amazon for independent bookstores, can be a crucial source of revenue if given the right attention and dedication. When I volunteered to take over maintenance of Semicolon Books’ homepage, it hadn’t been prioritized due to lack of time, so sales were nowhere near where they could be. I began by researching what keywords and title formats appealed the most to the site’s algorithm. As Semicolon Books is a nonprofit black-owned business that puts the spotlight on minoritized groups, I wanted every list I put out to have half its titles come from authors of color as a way to reflect the store’s values. I then would promote each list on the store’s Instagram story to increase exposure, resulting in a 206% sales increase in the first three weeks and a steady 50% increase in sales overall from the prior four months.

Nostalgia Tour: The Books That Shaped Your Childhood

  • This list was full of the forgotten gems from childhood. Remember that plastic-bound book you checked out once from your elementary library and LOVED? You might just find it here.

  • Some of my favorites from this list were Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix, the Animorphs series, The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline B. Cooney, and the 39 Clues series by Rick Riordan.

The Dystopias That Started it All

  • We’ve got dystopias on dystopias, but we’re not just talking your 2014 favorites. We’ve got some deep cuts from way back when that helped shape the genre itself.

  • My favorites from this list were The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, and Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler.

Tried & True: Our Verified Fresh #BookTok Picks

  • I know many are skeptical about anything recommended by BookTok (and with good reason), but these picks were certified by Semicolon’s own staff, so give it a shot!

  • Some of my favorites from this list were Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson, and The Selection by Kiera Cass.
